In the Bible, there are supernatural forces associated with governments. In some translations they are named for the geographical boundaries that limit them and for the authority they assert over us. Thus, these forces are called principalities and powers.
Like the angels, it seems that these forces were instituted as ministers of God to maintain his order (Romans 13:4). And like the angels, they can, and often do, rebel—becoming fallen, sinful and idolatrous—cloaking themselves in the trappings of religion.
So, I’m baffled by the modern church here in the U.S. working so hard to embedded itself into the working of government, corrupting the purity of its calling with the compromise of politics.
The Church, the “Spotless Bride” (Revelation 19:7-8) is supposed to be struggling against principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12).
So why is Christ’s betrothed so eager to jump into bed with those bad boys?
